Shows like that upend your very sense of self, they immerse and they obliterate. But when you finish an episode of The Wire or Carnivale or The Sopranos, you aren’t quite sure who you ARE anymore. When you finish an episode of Parks and Recreation, or Scandal or Ru Paul’s Drag Race, you might feel like you simply HAVE to watch another episode. That is something only the best, purest examples of narrative form can do. Highbrow television taps into our deepest narrative impulses and drags us into alternate worlds, worlds we often find it hard to leave. It’s a form that appeals to something deep and intrinsic inside us. It’s no surprise that The Wire has inspired full-blown Dickensian reimaginings of the show as a Victorian serial novel. Human beings tell themselves into existence through narrative, through stories. There are psychologists and neurobiologists who believe that consciousness itself would not exist without narrative. Human beings perceive the world through the prism of narrative and we always have. The serial drama is the most beguiling, intelligent and enjoyable method of satisfying our addiction to narrative. These shows demonstrated the most perfect, most sublime use of the television medium: the serial drama. They fundamentally changed what television was. Not all of these shows have aged well (it is pretty hard to watch The West Wing in a post-Obama, post-Sorkinism, post-War on Terror world), but at the time they aired, they were revolutionary. We are still living through the Second Golden Age of Television, a period that began in 1999 with the premiere of The Sopranos and subsequently resulted in a slew of beloved TV dramas such as The Wire, The West Wing, Carnivale, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and my own personal favourite, Deadwood. True highbrow television transcends pleasure or entertainment. However, shows that do meet these criteria elevate the form above mere enjoyment. For the record, I don’t think Game of Thrones qualifies as highbrow, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy it any less. There aren’t many shows that meet all those criteria, and of course not every show has to be highbrow to be valuable. To be truly highbrow, a show must: be brilliantly written, genuinely insightful, deeply original, demonstrate longevity and be influential on the medium itself and culture generally. If we must come up with a definition of highbrow TV, I think the category should be reserved for those shows that really are in a class of their own. Is Game of Thrones highbrow because it’s complicated and expensive and people sometimes make long speeches? Or is it lowbrow because there are dragons and gratuitous sex and sometimes the CGI is a bit dodgy? Is Girls highbrow because it’s topical and edgy and on HBO? Or is it lowbrow because it’s trivial and exasperating and a comedy? The only thing that’s even vaguely in question, is how we decide which shows make it into the ‘highbrow’ category. Highbrow TV doesn’t need a defender! It’s a battle that has been won! Highbrow TV is downright fucking awesome and every single person reading this already knows it. It’s kind of like being asked to defend Muhammad Ali against Sonny Liston, or to defend pizza over kale, or cats over dogs. I feel a little guilty being gifted highbrow TV as a subject to defend. This week, we’re publishing their speeches in full for your edification. Last week at the Highbrow vs Lowbrow Cultural Showdown, six of our favourite writers faced off to defend their preferred cultural forms. However, if your graphics card is not quite powerful enough for your 4k screen and you wish to run at 1080p, the mouse will become overly sensitive (as in many other games). This isn't an issue at 4k as it will simply replicate your desktop mouse sensitivity. That problem is still currently open with Blizzard, and they mentioned it was mostly an issue for Optimus-enabled laptops, so I would not be surprised if something similar is going on here.įinally, mouse sensitivity. It reminds me of a similar problem with Heroes of the Storm forcing borderless window mode in DX11, whereas playing the game in DX9 fixes that issue. Switching to DX11 and selecting fullscreen was successful, however, and so playing without UI scaling means edge scrolling works as expected while retaining a readable UI, just without the crispness of 4k. This meant that running in 1080p would have the game only showing in the top-left quarter of my screen instead of upscaling to fill it. Running in DX12 mode, the game forces itself to run in a borderless window on my laptop, regardless of whether fullscreen was selected or not. What I found was that disabling the UI scaling actually fixed this problem, of course at the expense of UI readability. Carefully looking at the edge of the screen in these locations, it appears as though the tip of the cursor was no longer on the screen when at the right-most or bottom-most positions when in 4k. This was a mess and unfortunately even with the comprehensive fixes listed over at CivFanatics in this thread, edge scrolling on the Right and Bottom of the screen simply did not work as expected. I am a fan of edge scrolling as I essentially like to play Civ one-handed. As far as 4k crispness goes, this is the only thing that appears to need fixing. To me, it would make more sense for the game to store high-res copies which are then downscaled at lower resolutions, instead of vice-versa. This is a bit disappointing for a 2016 game, and for 2D elements for which I am sure the artists have high-res copies available. However, the rest of the UI is clearly upscaled and icons in particular are blurry enough to be noticeable. Fonts are rendered very sharply at 4k res and look crisp. The UI scaling works well when enabled and nothing requires me to squint. The actual 3D rendering is fantastic, wonders look very nice in particular, with intricate ones such as the Bolshoi Theatre really showing off the benefits of 4k. I played through two games on high detail at 4k, with MSAA turned off. Out of the box, running at 4k res this game looks incredibly sharp. This machine (MSI GS63VR-6RF) has a 4k display with a GeForce GTX 1060 (Optimus, so no G-sync) which is powerful enough to play the game at just-maybe-acceptable frame rates at native res. After all, gaming beyond 1080p is only going to become more and more common as this game matures. It hasn't been 100% smooth sailing, so I thought it might be good to have a place to record issues as they're encountered. Since I couldn't find anything definitive in one place, I thought I might just share my experiences so far with Civ6 on my new 4k-capable laptop. It’s also possible to give your users a call using their VoIP phone, so you can more easily talk while sharing the screen, as well as additional features like scheduling and instant messaging support. Mikogo also offers simple link sharing, similar to and ScreenLeap, making it easy to share your screen with multiple participants simultaneously. This one costs $16/month, paid annually, which is reasonable for the extra features you can get. The free account only allows for two people at the conference, whereas you can have up to 25 participants per session in their Professional option. It’s got a lot of great details particular to screen sharing, such as the ability to switch screen sharing from one user to another, control keyboard and mouse functions, and record the screen.Īlthough the ability to record the screen sharing event is available only on their Professional account, this is likely the one you’d end up getting. Its main differentiating point is that it is completely browser based, eliminating the need for any downloads. Mikogo boasts over 3,000 customers, including those such as Intel and Dell. Additionally, if you’d like to expand your plan, you’ll be able to have multiple video conferences, a call-in number, one-click scheduling, a personal link, online whiteboard, and more. If you’re looking for a straightforward and free solution for screen sharing, offers the benefits of being reliable and well-performing. Screen share components include the ability to only share certain windows or sections instead of your entire screen, saving you the trouble of needing to be certain that you closed those funny cat videos on YouTube before you start the call. This software also offers video conferencing, conference call, scheduling, and more, if you want an app that encompasses more features for managing virtual teams. This screen sharing app doesn’t limit how long you can share your screen for, even on the free version, and it lets up to 10 people view your screen together. The person sharing their screen will need to sign up for an account, but it’s also a simple process with a friendly user interface. follows the same minimalist premise as ScreenLeap with the ability to send a link to those who you’d like to share the screen with. For a single user with unlimited endpoints, for example, it’s $660 per year. However, for commercial users, it can get pricey. After it’s set up on both members’ computers, you can choose whether you’d like just to share the screen or also use the remote assistance software option.įor personal purposes, TeamViewer is completely free without any limitations. Instead of just sending an access code or link, all participants need to have TeamViewer downloaded on their desired device. However, it’s not quite as simple as ScreenLeap. In fact, it’s available on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Windows phone, and even Blackberry. It is available for every operating system, including the capacity to share screens with people on smartphones too. What this means is that the person you’re sharing the screen with actually can control it for you. While this software is a favorite remote desktop tool, it also hosts remote desktop and assistance software. It’s loaded with features, has a strong focus on security, and is dependable. TeamViewer is a prevalent screen sharing software with over 12 million sessions per day and used by large companies such as Microsoft and iRobot. With either plan, users can view screens from a desktop, tablet, and smartphone without having to install any software. If you need someone to see your screen longer than this, they offer a pro version with unlimited screen share for $39/month. The free version allows eight viewers and lets you share for up to two hours. One important thing to note is that Java must be enabled to view it. Anyone that has this link can then see anything that’s happening on your computer screen. As soon as you go to the website, you read, “No downloads, installs, or sign-ups needed to view your screen!” While the person who is sharing the screen will need a small, one-time download, the process is straightforward and user-friendly.Īfter this, you can just click “Share Screen Now,” which will give you a link that you can share. ScreenLeap prides itself on its simplicity. For times like these, we’ve researched and found the best remote desktop software for you and your digital nomads. Instead, you need to see exactly what’s on their screen or vice versa. When you’re working with remote workers, sometimes verbal communication isn’t enough. Either way, you’ll need to have the ColorMunki Display plugged in and placed near your monitor for it to continually analyse ambient light levels. This will automatically adjust the new colour profile to factor changes in ambient light, or simply notify you of any changes. This data is then used to automatically create a colour profile that’s tells your graphics card to adjust its colour output to compensate for your monitor’s inaccuracies.Īfter the calibration is complete, you can then choose how often to activate ambient light monitoring. After the 5-or-so-minute slideshow process is complete, the device determines the discrepancies between your monitor’s colour output and its ideal colour measurements. Once in place, the software displays a full-screen slideshow of various colours which are analysed by the colorimeter and compared to its predefined ideal colour values. You can get it to sit tight once your monitor is tilted up and after some delicate positioning, but it’s a pity it feels less stable than some rival designs. The reason this is problematic is that if the colorimeter doesn’t sit completely flush against your screen, ambient light leaks could corrupt the calibration result. It’s tall, narrow shape is prone to rocking around on the surface of the computer screen when you positon it to calibrate, and the problem isn’t helped by the position of cable input which can drag and tip the device from side to side. Where Datacolor’s Spyder colorimeters – and to a lesser extent, the ColorMunki Smile – have a relatively large footprint, the ColorMunki Display shares the same physical design as X-Rite’s i1Display Pro. With this set, it’s time to rest the ColorMunki Display against your monitor for colour calibration, and it’s here that the devices only real flaw becomes apparent. In Easy mode, you’re first instructed to place the colorimeter on your desk so it can measure the brightness of the ambient light around your workspace so your monitor brightness can be adjusted accordingly. To profile a standard LCD display panel, there are two wizard options: Easy, and Advanced. However, while the Smile has no compromises in its calibration accuracy, you’ll need to step up to the ColorMunki Display if you want even a moderate amount of control over the calibration process. The ultimate expression of this philosophy is the pared-down ColorMunki Smile, which uses a wizard interface almost completely free of technical terms, making it about as friendly and simple as you could imagine. The ColorMunki range – or specifically its software – has been designed to minimise jargon and make colour calibration as simple and painless as possible. Consequently the calibration process can be daunting when technical terms like ‘LUT’, ‘white point’, and ‘delta-e colour difference’ are thrown about. Product ImagesĬolour calibration was once the preserve of media professionals who needed to ensure exacting colour consistency between monitor output and print media. The ColorMunki Display currently retails for around £119/$164, putting it in competition with Datacolor’s slightly cheaper Spyder 5 Xpress and its marginally more expensive Spyder 5 Pro. You also get Flare Correct, which adjusts the calibration to compensate for glare reflecting off your monitor’s screen. Like its ColorMunki siblings, the Display is pitched at photographers and creative enthusiasts, rather than industry professionals, and includes accompanying software with a strong focus on ease of use, while still including essential customisation options.įeatures that set the ColorMunki Display apart from the more basic Smile include projector calibration, as well as ambient light detection to automatically adjust a colour profile to compensate for variations in the intensity of ambient lighting. The ColorMunki Display is designed for monitor, projector and mobile device colour calibration. The ColorMunki Display sits in the middle of X-Rite’s trio of ColorMunki colorimeters, providing more control and versatility than the entry-level ColorMunki Smile, but without the printer profiling capabilities of the ColorMunki Photo. Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to felony assault, and was sentenced to two years in jail, but served only 45 days of his sentence. Investigators also noted that Wahlberg "made numerous unsolicited racial statements about ' gooks' and 'slant-eyed gooks '". When Wahlberg was arrested and returned to the scene of the first assault, he told police officers: "I'll tell you now that's the mother-fucker whose head I split open." Later, Wahlberg would explain that he was on PCP at the time. Later the same day, Wahlberg attacked Johnny Trinh, another Vietnamese-American, punching him in the eye. Then 16, he assaulted a middle-aged Vietnamese-American man on the street, calling him a "Vietnam fucking shit" and knocking him unconscious with a large wooden stick. Wahlberg perpetrated another racist assault in April 1988. In August 1986, civil action was filed against Wahlberg for violating the civil rights of his victims, and the case was settled the next month. The next day, Wahlberg and the others followed a group of mostly black fourth-graders (including one of the victims from the previous day) taking a field trip on a beach, yelled racial epithets, threw rocks at them, and "summoned other white males who joined" in the harassment. In June 1986, a 15-year-old Wahlberg and three friends chased after three black children while yelling "Kill the nigger, kill the nigger" and throwing rocks at them. Sparkfizt, I picked up the Pyrana Prime and it really is fun to use. Will finally be able to start getting parts for those new three corpus weapons in the dojo. and I'm 2k rep (daily capped) from Old Mate with SU. Some low-hanging MR fruit there for sure. So I didn't realize that I never leveled the Diriga and Wyrm. I'll agree that Dual Rounds is a bit underwhelming, but that's only really a noticeable issue for the Velocitus and perhaps the Fluctus - all the other weapons either put out bullets so quickly that it doesn't matter, or fire pellets and as such take full advantage of the 60% every shot.Grattler is a pain in the butt for Oxium, that's all I know. Automatic Trigger, on the other hand, is balanced to account for the generally high base Fire Rate the weapons have, plus the more recent addition of Arch-Gun Ace. When you account for both of these factors, Heavy Weapons actually tend to have better damage scaling than other weapons in terms of raw+elemental damage. Rubedo Lined Barrel is balanced against the fact that they have higher-than-average base damage, plus the fact that their Elemental mods are significantly better than those of other weapon types. A couple of them are problematic, such as the Grattler (too much Punch Through) and the Velocitus (too much recoil), and none of them are head an shoulders above their standard equivalents (particularly if you take Rivens into account, at least until they add those for Heavy Weapons - then things will get hardcore), but the latter part is probably intentional - DE wouldn't want them to become the new meta after all.Īs for the mods, most of them are somewhat weaker than their counterparts because all of the Heavy Weapons have very high base stats. Most of the Heavy Weapons are actually extremely strong, easily in the top 5% for their type, even if some of the mods are weaker than their counterparts. Please test at your leisure, and hopefully I contributed a little to the wiki Ammo is low, stagger is annoying, but it looks cool. Overall, this gun is weird and I honestly like it better in space. Because of this weirdness Arch-Gun Ace is fantastic on the Velocitus, and the benefits are readily felt. Automatic Trigger increases the rate of fire of non charged shots. Shell Rush increases the speed of charge on the charge shot. This was test WITHOUT Sabot Rounds (didn't have it). Each slug also rolls a crit chance indivdually on each different target hit, some crit some don't (could be like others idk). Non charged shots seem to punchthrough once, whereas the charged shots punchthrough everything, sometimes. This was tested with Max Rubedo Barrel, Max Paralax Scope, against a 160 CHG, no headshots. Velocitus only gets the x3.0 crit multiplier on charge shot, and a standard x2.0 on non charged shots. This could probably be the same with other archguns. If a Velocitus is equipped in your heavy and standard archwing loadout you get weird numbers. The charge shots are so fast they completely ignore Magnetize all together. The uncharged projectiles are very fast and dissipate quickly in Mag's Magnetize, as they orbit at very high velocity. Comet Blast does not increase this damage. On some charge shots the Velocitus does a shit ton of unlisted impact damage. Sorry guys, this means DE is probably gonna fix this the wrong way Note: it seems this also works with Zephyr, for some reason. Note: Stagger immunity did NOT work with:īUT Atlas is immune to the stagger because of his passive and the mods appear to work with him. Marked Target appears to also suffer this same fate. Resolute focus has NO effect of the stagger on charge shot effect, despite seemingly designed for that purpose?Ĭritical Focus has NO effect if you are staggered because it appears the charge shot is projectile based and you break aim as you fire, so the round connects while you're not aimed thus negating the mod entirely.
